Janet Yellen
The Economist Janet Louise Yellen
graduated from Brown University in 1967 with a degree in economics, and in 1971
received her Ph.D. in Economics from Yale. After teaching at Harvard, she went to
work for the Federal Reserve. Since 1980 Yellen has been a faculty member at
the University of California at Berkeley. She has served on multiple committees
including the Economic Policy Committee of the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development. She served as president and chief executive officer
of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, in which she was able to forecast
the housing crisis of 2008, and vice chair of the Board of Governors. In
February 2014, she was appointed to a four-year term in office as chair of the
Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, making her the first woman to
serve this position.
As chair on
the Federal Reserve she must help guide the central bank’s monetary policy; in
addition, being the spokesperson for the Federal Reserve makes her the country’s
economic expert. She has the ability to influence the stock market, value of
the dollar, and interest rates. Normally the Fed Chair serves eight or more
years even though the term is four. This benefits the economy because these
economic tools move slowly and need constant management. Yellen’s ability to
indict real threats to the economy and forecast future ones makes her a great
leader. Yellen specializes in the causes, mechanisms, and implications of
unemployment. This may not be related to economics of a business organization,
but the organization of the government and the way the economy is controlled is
a highly complex and sensitive organization. Yellen has the ability to affect
the value of everything in this country that has value.
